Furlow House Rules

1. Manners

We expect Furlow House guests, including their invitees, to conduct themselves in a considerate and mature manner. If this rule is followed, all of the other house rules fall into line easily and should require little thought or attention.

2. Responsibility

House guests, and their invitees, are responsible for the consequences of their actions, whether accidental or intentional. Injury to others, or damage to property, due to the actions or inactions of house guests or their invitees must be paid for by house guests or their insurers. Furlow House expects reimbursement for damage to property within thirty days of the time it is identified. We are flexible on the means of payment. House guests agree that their credit card will be charged for the fair market value of property damage done by them, or their invitees, if other payment arrangements are not made within one week of the time property damage is identified, or at any time if other arrangements are not honored by the guest.

Normal wear and tear of the property at Furlow House is expected and is not the responsibility of the guests.

3. Permitted Activities

Guests are encouraged to enjoy the normal and customary activities undertaken by responsible adults and their families. These activities need to be undertaken in a way that is consistent with the situation of Furlow House in a quiet, residential neighborhood. Activities which require special equipment, such as rollerblading, golfing, skiing, or ice skating, must be undertaken in a manner which does not cause damage to property.

4. Forbidden Activities

Any activity which causes harm to others or to property, or is illegal, is strictly forbidden. The neighbors have instructions to report illegal activities by house guests to police. In the event house guests or their invitees engage in forbidden activities, their right to occupy Furlow House will be revoked at once without refund of any part of the amount they have paid for that right.

5. Quiet Times

Furlow House strives to be a good neighbor. One of the principal enjoyments of our neighborhood a is its quietness. We therefore require that all loud activities (such as playing radios, televisions, or boisterous conversation) be broken off no later than 11 P.M. We suggest that prior to 7 am., the respectful quiet of the house and neighborhood be maintained in any way possible.

6. No Pets

We like pets but we can't figure out a way to let them stay at Furlow House without lots of complications, so we have a "no pets" rule. If you must travel with a pet, we will assist you in arranging for a local kennel or other arrangements for your pet during your stay. Pets are not permitted in Furlow House at any time.

7. Outdoor and sporting equipment

Outdoor and sporting equipment must stay outside of the main house. Equipment that is clean and dry may be kept on the front porch; dirty or wet equipment may be stored in the garage.

8. Cooking and eating

House guests are encouraged to make full use of the cooking facilities, including the smoker-barbecue. We try to keep some staples around but suggest that you count on supplying all ingredients for anything you intend to cook. Cleanup after cooking and eating is the responsibility of the house guests.

In order to minimize property damage, we strongly suggest that guests limit eating to areas on the first floor.

9. Smoking

Smoking is permitted on the front porch. Smoking is not permitted elsewhere in the house.

10. Telephone and Fax

A telephone is provided for the convenience of guests. It is also Furlow House's home telephone. There is no charge for local calls. We suggest that long distance calls be charged to your own telephone service or paid for by guests by a personal or business calling card. Long distance calls made during a guests's stay, not attributable to Furlow House, will be charged to the guests' credit card with a markup for the administrative expenses we incur in doing this.

Furlow House has a fax machine which is available for use by house guests. Long distance charges should be handled in the same manner as the telephone. There is no charge for up to 10 pages of incoming or outgoing faxes per day; after 10 pages, the charge is $1.00 per page plus applicable phone charges.

11. Safety

Please familiarize yourselves with the locations of the fire extinguishers (first floor kitchen, second floor linen closet) as well as the means of egress from the house, on arrival.

12. Bathroom etiquette

While there are only two bathrooms, of modest size, there is ample hot water thanks to a new boiler/hot water heater system. All guests ought to be able to take consecutive showers without running out of hot water.

In order to keep the bathrooms running efficiently, guests are asked to keep their towels with them in their rooms, on the racks provided. After using a bathroom, try to return it to a neat and orderly condition for the next guests.

Towels are in the linen closet on the second floor. Soiled towels should be deposited in the hamper in the second floor hallway. Spare soap, toilet tissue, and tissues, are stored in the bathrooms.
